I presume the side cover, mentioned is the cover that holds the oil filter in place. Yes it is good advice to check this cover again
I would assume that the only thing that the rubber "O" ring is for is to seal the filter, so as to make the oil go through the filter when the oil is hot. Or course the oil filter has a built in oil by pass so that when the oil is cold, it does not have to go through the paper element. It is very, important that the oil filter is installed with the right side out, so that the built in, oil bypass works as it should. In summary I feel that not having the rubber "O" ring in place would not damage the engine, but also the filter would not filter the oil.
